1 Research areas and focus
Mathematical modeling is indispensable in guiding solutions for complex problems, obtaining compact representations of data, and abstracting, predicting, controlling and understanding real-world systems. Mathematical models often assume different types of mathematical objects, operators and algebras. The models describe deterministic phenomena as well as capture statistical and causal relationships, and consolidate empirical observations with specific domain knowledge under implicit, explicit, structural and other constraints. The research topics of particular interest include but are not limited to developing strategies for automated model building, devising universal data processing workflows, working with hierarchical, heterogeneous and multi-scale models, analyzing models in very high-dimensional spaces, processing stochastic signals under various constraints, devising explainable and interpretable modeling and data processing strategies, testing and validating models, designing computer experiments, and similar. The applications of fundamental theory of particular interest are wireless mobile networks, AI systems, robotics, high-performance and intelligent computing, intelligent transportation systems, as well as computational biology and bioinformatics.
